Crooked Fence Brewery just released their 2014 Little Bitch Otter India Nut Brown Ale! There were probably 1000 people at PreFunk Beer, 1100 Front Street location for this release party. There was an interesting article printed in the Idaho Statesman in late March about the new location for Crooked Fence Brewery. In the article, it was stated that,
Garden City-based Crooked Fence Brewing Co. plans to relocate from 5242 W. Chinden Blvd. to Woodriver Cellars winery, 3705 Idaho 16 in Eagle.
The brewery is in the process of purchasing the 5-acre property and will begin the transition by opening a new brewpub-style restaurant there March 29.
The Woodriver Cellars space has been renamed Crooked Flats.
“From the beginning, Crooked Fence has wanted and worked towards owning a destination-style brewery,” the company says in a press release. “This will be the place to further grow the Crooked Fence brand and culture. Along with the special event structures and park-like atmosphere, there will also be a tasting room and restaurant serving great food, craft brews and Idaho wines.”

And indeed, it is good to see that the Crooked Fence Brewing has opened at the old Eagle Knoll Winery site, north on Hiway 16 – the road to Emmett. You will see the sign off on the west side of the highway. A large parking lot. Ample space. Here are some photos. Cheers!
The Cloud 9 nano brewery opend on March 17th in the Albertsons Shopping Center at 18th and State Streets, 1750 W. State St. It was a full house! In the following quote from their website – link above – we see that they are trying very hard to use locally produced products, both in their beer production and their food preparation. I know their hamburger rolls come from Gaston Bakery here in Boise.
We are Boise’s first nanobrewery, and the only certified organic brewery in the state, producing only four barrels per hand-crafted batch. We are focused on sustainable, local, and organic beers and our brewery also houses an amazing restaurant with a similar focus.
By keeping batches to only four barrels in size, we are able to vary our beers to match seasonal ingredients and provide a wealth of variety for craft beer lovers.

Their seasonal menu includes such items as Classic Burger – $9.50 and photo below, Chicken Pesto – $9.50, Roasted Veggie – $9.50, Shepard’s Pie – $10.50, Vegetarian Shepard’s Pie – $10.50, Corned Beef and Cabbage – $10.50 and Corned Beets and Cabbage – $8.50. I had the burger and it was very good. They use Gaston Bakery buns and 3/1 burgers (3 burgers to the pound).They also serve a wide variety of appetizers ranging from $5.00 – $7.00. Some of the folks there were getting their salads and they looked good. $2.50 – $8.95. They serve beer, of course, and their own made root beer which I had earlier and it was very good.
Good to see that they serve Idaho wines, Indian Creek Winery and 3 Horse Ranch Winery. Seating is limited, about 35 seats at tables and at the bar. They hope to have outside seating when the weather changes. Enjoy these photos and hope to see you there!
Happy Oktoberfest and Halloween everyone! On October 9, the Treasure Valley Wine Society (TVWS) broke from tradition and held a beer tasting for Oktoberfest. There were about 26 people who enjoyed the beers that were presented by Dave and Cody from the HomeBrewStuff here in Boise. They carry over 600 beers in stock for our enjoyment. You can see a link to the shop in the sidebar. We owe them a great big Thank-You for helping this event to be a success in such short notice. (Other breweries here in Boise backed out in the last minute and the folks at the HomeBrewStuff came to the rescue!) Here are some photos from the event. Enjoy!

Hofbrau German lager.

Spaten Opimator (dopplebock)
Deep and dark colored, rich and malty taste and full-bodied, Spaten’s strongest beer is considered by many beer connoisseurs as the world’s finest dark beer. Shelf life up to 12 months. In the dark and cold times Spaten Optimator brings a warm light. Spaten Optimator is the classic German bottom-fermented dark beer “Doppel-Bock.”
Petrus aged red.
Categorized as a Wild/Sour Ale, Petrus Aged Red Ale is loaded with cherries and drinks more in the style of a Lambic than a Sour. Only the sweet tartness will give you any indication of the very respectable 8.5% abv so be careful with this one.

Just a reminder – The Treasure Valley Wine Society (TVWS) will be holding an Oktoberfest/Beer Tasting and German Buffet on October 9 at the Meadow Lake Retirement Center in the Grand Lodge. Please contact a Board member to reserve a spot. $25/person for Members and $30/person for Non-Members. This should be a fun and exciting change of venue for the society. And it all started on Saturday morning …… Early, for me! 5am. It was a tailgate weekend as BSU was playing Southern Mississippi (BSU won! 60 – 7). Seeing as how we did not have a “tailgate”, we renamed this Saturday event as a “Backgate Party”! We do have a back gate. Started the smoker at 5:30am and smoked 3 racks of pork ribs for 2 hours. But before I could do anything, we needed breakfast. Look at what I made.
And then to prep for the game. But it does not start until 8:30pm. Lots of time. Smoke the ribs for 2 hours in Alder. Then finish off some of them in the oven and the others in the crock pot. Slow … Slow … Slow cooking and low heat.
Add to the ribs some Slaw, Baked Beans, Beer, Apple Crisp (thanks Marnie), Brian, Marnie and Mac and we’ve got a party. It was a long day for me. From 5am until close to 12 mid-night. Brian made breakfast on Sunday morning. Robin has this awesome recipe for Chiles Rellenos and Brian used it. Super job, Brian!
But then, next Tuesday we have a Board meeting with the TVWS. October finds the group trying beer! Yes, beer! Not wine this month. And to keep in the “bier frame of mind”, we are also doing an Oktoberfest theme. This should really be fun. For the Board meeting, we are trying some Samuel Adams Oktoberfest Bier, German Potato Salad, Acme Bake Shop Rye Bread and I know some other goodies. (It pays to be a Board member!) I am making a Sauerbratten, click the link for our recipe. Busy, busy, busy. But fun, fun, fun! Tonight we are going to some friends house for dinner. Going to take them some wines and stuffed cream puffs. Cheers!
Highlands Hollow Brewhouse, formerly known as Harrison Hollow, was thee site of a Meet-Up group tonight. We only ordered appetizers, namely the Loaded Fries, which are really loaded, and the Black Bean Nachos which were very good! Both are pictured below. We also had a beer sampler of 10 samples. Personally, I liked the Doolie’s best. To copy from their menu, “Doolie’s is a dark ale with ruby overtones which show up if you hold it to the light. A slightly roasted flavor profile and the darker color comes from the use of three different specialty malts that are roasted in varying degrees, to stringent specifications.” The food was good, understanding that it was Happy Hour Fare and the service was good. It would be interesting to order something from their main menu. The food and the sampler that we got was $22.00 for the two of us. They have a full menu of salads, pasta, a variation of entrees, vegetarian, sandwiches burgers and desserts. Our visit here was good and we will probably return. Where 10 Barrel and Table Rock are 5-Star pubs, Highlands Hollow is a 4-Star pub. Enjoy the photos.

Finally. After all this waiting, 10 Barrel Brewery in Boise opened! The photo here is of the front of the pub on Bannock Street at 9th, across from the Chinese restaurant, Yen Ching.
The restaurant space inside iss large and open. The noise level is tolerable. It is busy noise, not loud music or TV. That will work for us. And when the weather changes, they will probably open some very large doors and have an area where one can site on the sidewalk, but be served inside. And yes, they serve Apocalypse IPA. In my not so humble opinion (IMNSHO) one of the best, if not The Best, Ipa’s made. We had a Caesar Salad and a 10 Barrel Burger and the IPA went very well with both. Good beer, like good wine, is meant to be consumed with food. It might be made with barley and other grains, but it still needs food. Enjoy the photos posted here that I took on our First Visit. There will be a Second Visit and probably more. Overall, a good experience. Out of 5 Stars, probably one of the better pubs in Boise so I rate it a 4 Star pub. Great job, 10 Barrel!
